All Christian churches in Taiwan had accepted the underprivileged and homeless people since they were founded. In 2003, however, many churches started to reject the underprivileged and homeless people after the infectious disease of SARS erupted in Taiwan. Six Quaker churches in New Taipei City faced the same problem.
The priests pointed out that their church members no longer went to the churches. Church members were in fear of SARS spread by the underprivileged and homeless people who attended gatherings and agape meals with them. Priest Chen, Hsin-chao of Hai-Shan Church came up with an idea. He worked with six other Quaker churches to establish a church exclusively for the underprivileged and homeless people in order to solve the problem. This is how Grace Home Church came into being.
On November 16, 2003, Banqiao Grace Home Church was founded!
Why the churches are named Grace Home Church? In Taiwan, Jesus Christ is known as Grace to many people. This hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” is noted for its heartfelt lyric, telling us that the grace and love of Jesus is available for us any time…Priest Ho, You-yi of Banchen Church came up with this name “Grace Home”, aiming to encourage the underprivileged to seek help from us notwithstanding their different religious belief. For this reason, we use this name “Grace Home.” Actually, “Grace Home” and “Grace Home Church” are two sides of same coin!
Inspired by the grace of God, Deacon Lee, Chien-lung has assumed the responsibilities of Service Ministry for the Grace Home. He made up his mind to fulfill Jesus’ preachment “the good news is proclaimed to the poor.”
Grace Home Church has set up many churches across Taiwan:
Taipei City: Taipei Grace Home Church, Wanhua Grace Home Church, Nangang Grace Home Church, and Fuxing Grace Home Church
New Taipei City: Banqiao Grace Home Church, Sanchong Grace Home Church, Tucheng Grace Home Church, and Tamsui Gracee Home Church

All Grace Home Churches in Taiwan aim to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and at the same time provide relief for the unprivileged. All service stations in Taiwan, from north to south, are linked with the service network to provide free meals, shelters, relief, education and medical services on a daily basis, taking tangible actions to help the unprivileged in a timely fashion.
The service seems to be nothing special, but the unprivileged and the financially stressed families need it desperately. Without the service, they will definitely come to a dead end. The seemingly ordinary service is undoubtedly the only hope for the unprivileged and the financially stressed families.
★ 5 Services For the Unprivileged
All Grace Home Churches in Taiwan spare no effort to provide relief for many, many financially stressed families.
Restricted by official rules and processes, government agencies sometimes are unable to provide the unprivileged with social welfare resources in time.
For this reason, many borough heads resort to Grace Home Church for assistance.
Upon hearing from the borough heads, we immediately provide daily necessities to solve their urgent needs.
Most importantly, we provide the most needed 5 services for the unprivileged, namely, dining together, shelters, subsidies, spiritual supply, and volunteer medical service.
We strive to fulfill Jesus’ preachment “the good news is proclaimed to the poor.”
For the unprivileged and financially stressed families, we provide following services:
(I). Dining together:
The unprivileged is short of food and clothing – the basic daily necessities.
Our service stations provide free lunch and dinner each and every day for the financially stressed families, elderly people, handicapped, disabled persons, one-parent families, the rehabilitated, homeless people, melancholiac, and the economically disadvantaged.
1. We provide free meals to satisfy the basic need of the unprivileged.
2. Once the daily need is satisfied, the unprivileged is no longer hungry and is not motivated to steal other people’s property.
(II) Shelters:
We provide shelters for the elderly persons, unemployed, one-parent families, people with physical and mental disorder, and homeless people bothered by illness.
1. We provide free shelters and free meals for the elderly people, the disadvantaged, people without dependence, and the unemployed. We help them to calm themselves down. Once they calm down, they can decide what to do for themselves.
2. During their stay in the shelters, we provide them with other services such as mental rehabilitation & consulting, free medical service, and employment information. We not only provide shelters for them, but help them reconstruct their lives.
(III) Relief for the financially stressed families:
If the financially stressed families reside in remote areas, we visit them 1-2 times each month and bring cooking oil, rice and side crops to them. If the financially stressed families live nearby the service center, they are welcome to receive living materials personally on the same day of Sunday worships, four times each month.
1. When we visit the unprivileged, we find many people having big problem with their daily lives, but they do not qualify as mid-to low-income households. For this reason, they are unable to receive any assistance from either government agencies or private charity organizations. We provide them with living materials to satisfy their daily needs. If they reside in remote areas, we send them living materials on a regular basis. If they reside nearby the service centers, they receive living materials personally from the service centers.
2. We do not solve problems for “an individual person.” Actually, we solve problems for “a whole family.” We provide food to satisfy the daily needs of the unprivileged families.
(IV) Spiritual supplies:
At Grace Home Church, we share Bible Verse with the unprivileged and teach them to sing the hymns together in order to comfort their minds. Our pastoral staffs visit the unprivileged families either at their homes or in the hospitals. We consistently keep them company, sharing the God’s blessings with each and every one of the physically, mentally and spiritually unprivileged minority.
1. Driven by the power of faith, we help the unprivileged and provide them with spiritual supplies. We feed them and comfort their minds, doing our best to help them find the turning point of their lives.
2. We help the unprivileged to find power from their faith, and with the positive influence and encouragement of their peers, some of the unprivileged start to find the value of their lives. We have seen many successful cases – the recipients regained confidence in their lives and started to help other unprivileged people.
3. We consistently keep them company, doing our best to share with them not only the daily necessities, but the God’s love, blessings and hopes.
(V) Volunteer medical service alliance:
The unprivileged cannot afford to pay medical insurance fee, let alone the huge medical bills. Over the past years, Grace Home Church has worked with private clinics and organized “Grace Home Volunteer Medical Service Alliance.” Grace Home Churches assess the unprivileged people and issue “Grace Home Card” for them to register, visit medical doctors and receive medicines free of charge, allowing the unprivileged people to have access to medical service in the same way as others.
★ Stories about Poverty Alleviation
We have many, many stories about “poverty alleviation.” Every family has to tackle its own problems. Fortunately, we have the God’s love and assistance to help us solve the problems, no matter how desperate the situation is. We thank the God for using Grace Home Church to support the unprivileged and their families and keep company with them. Please join us to show our concern for them……【QRcode】
